I dance because I do not trust words

I dance because I do not trust words

With Kaori Ito and Hiroshi Ito (2015 Creation)

In this intimate portrait, Kaori Ito explores her roots through an artistic and sensitive exchange with her father, Hiroshi Ito. To stage this reunion, she invents a strange language, that resembles them, at the intersection of words and dance. Through blunt, deep, sharp or trivial questions she breaks the ice and plays with her father’s silence, laden with secrets. Both daughter and choreographer, she watches him evolve on stage – light, diligent and happy, like a child. Then she cuts the words short, and abandons herself to the space, to try to express with her body what cannot be said. Making the space move with her dance the way her father taught her. And maybe, dance together, to rebuild in art those blood ties – invisible and fascinating.

Why do you smoke? Why don’t you see your children from your other family any more? Why don't you like my friends? Why did you listen to Greek music when we were little? Why, in restaurants, do you always pay with Mum’s wallet?

Kaori Ito

“Closer to a family of dance-theatre where we find James Thierrée, Alain Platel, Aurélien Bory and Denis Podalydès, Kaori Ito (…) imposed a spectacular humanist and emotional chapter dedicated to her father and their relationship.”

Rosita Boisseau – Le Monde

“I dance because I do not trust words, is a deeply touching work that articulates dance and conversation in a dialogue between the dancer and choreographer Kaori Ito and her father, on stage with her for the occasion. (…) Only the stage could sacralise such a love story, which is also a story about loving art. This unique link that joins the father and the daughter, it now belongs to the audience to preserve its memory.”

Alice Bourgeois – Mouvement

Why do you treat me like a princess when I arrive home, and then like an egomaniac afterwards? Do you want me to move back to Japan? Why, at Christmas, did we have dinosaurs instead of fir trees?
